About The Northern Manor...hmm where to begin...well my name is Amy Gerber and my husband is Matthew Gerber. A little history about us well really me since I am the one who works from home full time with our dogs; Matt owns Gerber Drywall and that keeps him pretty busy, but we both do take care of our dogs. I have worked with dogs practically my whole life; I love them dearly and care for them intensely. As a child, I was an AKC junior handler and showed my mom's Lhasa Apso, Bubbles. As a teen, I decided to partake in other activities besides AKC dog shows and I kind of left the "Dog World" as I call it behind. In 2002, I graduated Valedictorian from Thiel College with a 4.0 Bachelor of Arts degree in English (focusing on both fields of the major: literature and writing and I also obtained a minor in political science); after I graduated, I decided to work; I spent about a year doing that and then I decided I wanted to go back to my roots and live near my family and spend time with my true joys of life: my animals.
So now you may be wondering about my age, my experiences with my breeds, and my experience in dog breeding. Well let's start with the Norwegian Elkhounds; honestly, I was born into this breed. Many of my family members and extended family have owned this breed for decades. To me it seems like once they discovered the Norwegian Elkhound breed there was no turning back and they have been glued together ever since. When I was in college, our family dog Smokey died in 2000 (he was 12). I decided that it was time for me to get a dog of my own that I could love and take on my daily walks, etc. and my brother decided it was time for him to get a puppy (an elkhound of course). So I adopted a 1.5 year old Norwegian Elkhound, Erik and Mike, my brother (and my family) bought a puppy that they named Kodi. Anyways long story short, when I was nearing the end of my senior year of college (about a year and a half since I adopted Erik) I knew I would be getting a job and going to live on my own very soon and thought since Erik had always had a playmate that I should buy another dog for him and that is how I got involved with the Siberian Husky breed. I found Cashmere and that was it: I was sold. Initially I was contemplating getting another elkhound, but once I met Cashmere it was all over: she was going to be my new dog. I loved her so much! And that is basically how The Northern Manor began.
I bought Cashmere with full registration because I did have breeding and showing experience and I was unsure where my life was going as many college students feel at the end of their four or so years and I was exactly that way. I had no idea what God had in store for me and I did what most graduates do and I got a job and went to work after I graduated. About a year later Matt and I decided that we wanted to get married and I decided that I wanted to devote my time to these two loving breeds and work solely with these two breeds and only these two breeds. I feel that by focusing my time, effort, and knowledge on two breeds is enough. I don't think that a breeder can breed many many breeds and know all of the important things that they need to know about each breed, but that is my opinion. So I have about 27 years of experience with the Norwegian Elkhound breed and about 5 with the Siberian Husky breed. Though I know my experience differs from one breed to the other it does not affect my knowledge and devotion that I have with both breeds. I am very serious about what I do here with our dogs and that is why I have done my research on these breeds; why we do testing on our breeding stock; why we try to provide our buyers with the healthiest puppy possible; and why all of our pups are vet checked, up-to-date on their shots, de-wormed on a regular basis, loved from the time they are born, and much much more. We want our customer’s to feel happy and comfortable while they are working with The Northern Manor and preparing their homes and families for their new puppy!
