The Northern Manor's Frequently Asked Questions

Question One

How much are your puppies and what is the difference between limited and full registration?

Our puppies are the same cost no matter their breed, sex, coat color; the only thing that changes cost is the type of registration. Limited registration cost is $782.00 and means that you are buying a pet only that you will not be showing in conformation or breeding (you can show in agility or obedience though). The dog purchased is to be spayed/neutered by their first birthday with no litters prior. Full registration cost is $1100.00 and means that you are buying a puppy that will be shown in AKC conformation events and is allowed to be bred. We will help our customers fulfill their dreams whether those are for AKC shows or for breeding; we will give as much advice and help that we can. For further information on Purchase Information visit our link.

Question Two

Do you ship your puppies and what is the cost?

Yes if it is necessary to ship your puppy to you we can do that. We have shipped over the years many puppies. The cost of shipping is roughly $300.00. To learn more go to our shipping link.

Question Three

Where are you located?

The Northern Manor is located in nw PA between Pittsburgh and Erie, PA. We are about 15-20 minutes off of Interstate 79 from the Geneva, PA exit. For more information visit our location link.

Question Four

Do you do health testing on your dogs and pups?

Yes we OFA all of our dogs and breed only dogs with healthy and passing hip x-rays. We also do not breed adult dogs that are not healthy. All of our dogs are vet checked and given a full physical exam once a year. All of our pups are vet checked at least twice before leaving our home and have passed their puppy physicals, the pups are up-to-date on their shots and their de-wormings.

Question Five

What do you feed your dogs and puppies?

We try to feed only what we feel is the best for our dogs and pups. At this time, I am convinced that the best food is Bil-Jac dog food products and Nu-Vet vitamins. To learn more about The Northern Manor's Nutrition visit our nutrition link.

Question Six

Do you show your dogs?

We do show our dogs and with that being said let me also say that it is a very competitive world out there to show dogs and also an expensive "hobby." Anyone who tells you it is not expensive is not being honest. It takes a lot of hard work, devotion, care, love, and commitment to thrive in this field. My husband and myself can not be travelling on the road to show at all times for the shows where the majors are so I pay our handler, Nina Fetter. I am pleased with her work, her love for our dogs, and her dedication to her job. She works very hard, but not every dog will show well or enjoy showing so not every dog is a Champion in show; though they are suitable for show by appearance, health, conformation, and personality.

Question Seven

How long have you been breeding?

Now this is an interesting question. I, Amy Gerber, have been breeding on and off since 1995; my first AKC show experience as a Junior AKC show handler was in 1992: I was 12. I am not saying by any means that I have shown and/or bred dogs since 1992 or 1995. I am just saying that on and off since 1992, I have seriously worked with dogs, showing, and breeding. My husband and myself are very serious about our breeding program and very much so care about our dogs and the puppies that we produce here at The Northern Manor. Question Eight

Are your dogs and puppies American Kennel Club registered (AKC)?

Yes all of our dogs, puppies, and litters are registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC). No matter which type of registration you are applying with the AKC (full or limited) you will be getting AKC papers for your puppy and your puppy is an AKC purebred dog.

Question Nine

Are Siberian Huskies and Norwegian Elkhounds good with kids and families?

Both breeds as long as they are bred for temperament are very good with children and families. They are very loving and confident breeds. The Northern Manor only breeds dogs with wonderful health and temperaments.

Question Ten

Do Siberian Huskies and/or Norwegian Elkhounds really need a fence?

This is an easy question and the answer is a 100% YES! There are many types of fences though and if you contact us we will be glad to tell you if the type of fence you have or are wanting to install will work with our breeds.

Question Eleven

Do Siberian Huskies and Norwegian Elkhounds shed? What does it mean when people say they are blowing their coats?

These are very good questions that do need to be answered about these breeds. The answer is yes these breeds do shed. But if their owner teaches their dog that being brushed is a positive experience a dog usually will just sit and be brushed for hours. The Northern breeds just need brushed out at a bare minimum on a weekly basis. Now the second question, "blowing coat" means that the dog is blowing or losing most/all of their undercoat hair. This is a natural thing and nothing to get worried about that the dog is losing so much hair. A Siberian Husky and Norwegian Elkhound will "blow" their coat twice a year. It usually lasts about a week, but can last as long as a month. The main thing is when it starts just keep brushing it with a fine tooth metal comb and that will get the undercoat out. The more diligent their owner is about brushing it the less hair there will be to be in the house. Overall though this is not a big deal; it just needs dealt with like anything else appropriately when it is occurring.
